We got through Father's Day and the rental car was returned this morning. I tracked down Carl and paid him for all the work he had done mowing while we were gone. The yard looks great. The flower gardens are another story. We got out the tools and started pulling weeds. The Illinois soil is a miracle that provides abundant food for so many people around the world. It is also capable of producing some of the biggest and toughest weeds known to man. Nothing useful will grow in the crack of a cement sidewalk. A three foot tall thistle will find a happy home in that spot. The other problem with the soil here is when it dries out it holds weeds like they are imbedded in concrete. The plan today was to get them knocked down and then use Roundup in a day or two in order to finish them off. The gardens in front of the house are all weeded. They will get sprayed and replanted over the next few days. Then the plan is to put on a good layer of mulch and hope the weeds get slowed down or stopped.
Lily and Teddi have been allowed free access to their fenced area in back of the house. Lily has taken up digging for moles again. It is fun to watch her. The area is surrounded by a 48 inch tall fence. Earlier today she was six feet inside the fence and digging with such effort the dirt was going over the top of the fence. So far they have not caught a mole but it is not because of lack of effort. Tomorrow it is back to the doctor for a brief check of my repaired eye. Then we are off to a neighbor's funeral. Shirley lived a good long life and leaves behind 10 children. They are a wonderful family and were raised by the best parents anyone could ask for. She and Leo can now proudly look down on them from on high knowing they did a great job. The afternoon will see more yard work as we try to clean everything up. No wood cutting on the agenda yet, there is just too much cleanup to do.
