| The Hobby Lobby decision by the Supreme Court has been the subject of an earlier blog post here. The posts below from the Huffington Post make clear some of the reasons that birth control and women's health care should not be determined by the employer. Women, contrary to what some may believe, are fully functional adult human beings who are capable of making independent decisions regarding their health and sexuality. The choices made do not need to be approved by her employer or controlled by them. If coverage is going to be allowed for male sexual dysfunction medications there appears to be no reason for any restrictions on female birth control options. It is simply an attempt to legislate morality by limiting choice. It has never worked in the past and will not work now. It also appears to be counterproductive. Those who are making these restrictions are anti-abortion. It seems clear, unless you are a complete idiot, that the restriction of birth control will result in more unwanted pregnancies and more abortions. If that is not the case then more children will be born to single mothers which will increase the number of children living in poverty and dependent on government assistance. The proof of this is in the states that choose to provide abstinence only sex education. Those are the states with the highest child poverty rates and the highest rates of teen pregnancy. Providing education telling kids that the only acceptable birth control method is not having sex just doesn't work. The problem of course is belief. Facts don't matter if your religious beliefs overrule your willingness to look at things from an objective point of view. If you believe, for example, the world is only 6,000 years old then all the fossils and scientific evidence to the contrary means nothing to you. Your beliefs have made you a scientific idiot. So, leave the decisions regarding women's choices in birth control to the women who are using those methods.
