Once More Into the Fray

The other day I ranted a bit about consistency. I thought when I finished that entry I was done. It seems too many of those on the conservative side of things just can't shut up about things and are so wrong about women's rights. So off I go again.

It seems that too many conservatives think that women's birth control is an attempt by women to have casual sex. Women want employer based birth control so they can be slutty. Even if they are right, and they aren't, what does it matter? Is it the government's function to determine what sexual behavior in the privacy of our own homes is acceptable? When an employer provides health care coverage to employees it is not being done because the employer is being kind. It is a part of the employees compensation package. The employee is trading their time and talent in exchange for a compensation package that includes wages, vacation and sick time and in many cases health care insurance. The employer receives tax incentives to provide health insurance. It does not give the employer, until Monday, the right to determine how the employee would utilize that insurance. It does raise a gender based question in my mind that some of these conservative talk show folks should address. They seem to feel recreational sex is inappropriate and that the sole function of sex is procreation. Employer based health care plans cover erectile dysfunction medications. Since boner pills are covered shouldn't their coverage be limited to men who are involved in married relationships with women of childbearing age? Why prescribe boner pills to a 70 year old man who is married to a woman who is beyond childbearing age or who has had a hysterectomy? They aren't having sex for procreation, they are just poking fun. Explain to me the difference. Are old guys just taking those pills so they can walk around with a bulge in their pants. I'm just looking for consistency here.

The ruling on Monday can be seen as nothing other than anti-woman. It is once again old men who don't understand how birth control works trying to control the lives and conduct of women. They seem to complain about the way Muslims treat women but have a blind eye when they look in the mirror at their own conduct. The consequences go far beyond Hobby Lobby as my prior post indicated. There are several Catholic owner run businesses who are claiming religious objections to all forms of birth control. That would be consistent with Catholic faith and it would seem they are going to be able to opt out of all birth control coverage. It would seem to me that the restriction or denial of birth control insurance coverage is going to result in more unintended and unwanted pregnancies. This may have the consequence of causing additional abortions. Of course those happy folks on the conservative side are interested in restricting abortion as well and have worked hard to restrict access. Maybe George Carlin was right. The conservatives seem to love war. They want us to stay in Afghanistan, go back to Iraq, control things in Syria, defend Israel, and on and on and on. George once said that these folks wanted live babies so they could turn them into dead soldiers. He might have been more right than I wanted to admit at the time.

The Republican Party is going to relegate itself to the dustbin of history if it continues to treat women as second class citizens. They don't deserve equal pay based on Republican votes. They don't have a right to equal health care coverage to men. They are, according to far too many conservatives, in need of a man to take care of them. Apparently they are unfamiliar with modern women who are clearly able to make their own decisions and don't need a man to take care of them. Until the Republican Party decides to stop deriding and offending over half the voting population they are going to have trouble winning elections.
