Not good

Today we went into Savannah to take cars of some shopping. It's the little things in life that drive you nuts. King size bed, queen size pillows. It just didn't work for me. We went to Bed Bath and Beyond and decide that maybe a good sharp kitchen knife was in order. Henkels seemed to be a good choice. Package touted the "German steel" in the knife. Regular readers know that when possible I buy items made in the U.S.A.  The package got examined and the knife made with "German steel" was manufactured in China. No sale. All the available knives were examined and none were made here. They were all, with one exception, made in China. The exception was made in Spain. No knife purchase today. We did pick up some decorating items at Bed Bath and Beyond, Marshall's and Home Goods. Then off to Haverty's to see about a couple of furniture items with our favorite salesman Patrik. Purchases made and time for lunch. We asked Patrik about a Chinese place and he had never eaten there. I had looked at reviews on line yesterday and Wangs got good reviews. Apparently in my head the refusal to buy Chinese made products could be reasonably offset by eating at a Chinese restaurant. My mind works in strange ways sometimes. I trusted the reviews and set the navigation system for Wangs. I'm surprised we didn't end up at a male strip club. The place looked good from the outside. We went in and the inside was clean and staffed by fellas speaking what sounded like Chinese to me. Seemed like another good sign. Menu looked good so we ordered. Carol got General Tso's chicken and I ordered a dish called Amazing Chicken. We also got hot and sour soup. The soup arrived first and the name was misleading. It should have been hot (spicy) and sour. It was in fact neither. It was not the worst I've ever had but it was close. The "Amazing" chicken was not amazing. Not good, not average. Some of it, the mushrooms and carrots, were undercooked. Some of it, the chicken, was overcooked and rubbery. The sauce was bland. The fried rice was overcooked and bland. It is sad when you must add soy sauce to what should be a complex palate of favors so it has some taste. The General Tso's chicken was no better. Again a dish that should be sweet and spicy was bland and tasteless.

What conclusions can be drawn from this.

1. The reviews like bad Chinese food or are family members of the owners.

2. The "chef" had an off day.

3. Southerners like bland crappy Chinese food.

4. Maybe a second chance will show them to be better than they were today. If we go again it may be months in the future.

  1. It is difficult to throw good money after bad. I don't have enough beats to my heart to try a bad place twice. But then catching mr eating Chinese would be a miracle itself.
